And then What Volition Modify Almost Social Security Numbers in June of 2011?
When SSN Randomization begins, the post-obit changes will take outcome regarding how Social Security Numbers are issued:

  • SSA will no longer issue SSN's based on geography (state and local area);
  • SSA will issue SSN'south commencement with the number "viii" which has never been done before;
  • SSA will include all possible SSN'due south with the number "seven" in position 1, rather than reserving SSN's starting with "7" for certain states and specific groups (e.g. nonresident aliens receiving SSN's through SSA's Enumeration at Entry program)

Some Things Won't Alter Because of SSN Randomization
Even with SSN Randomization, some aspects of how Social Security Numbers are assigned will non change. The SSA will not effect:

  • SSN'south first with the number "9";
  • SSN's beginning with the number "666" or "000" in positions 1-three;
  • SSN's with the number "00" in positions iv-5;
  • SSN's with the number "0000" in positions 6-ix.

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) tin can never be used to study earned income.  When an employer receives a W-4 grade listing a Social Security Number that begins with a "ix", the employer should recognize that this is an ITIN and it cannot be used when filing W-2 forms.  Notwithstanding, if this is the only number provided, the SSA advises employers to use information technology.
